MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — The Northern Westchester Hospital staff was handed the keys to a brand new radiology-imaging suite this week, and along with the open door came a large reimbursement check from the state of New York. The check, which amounted to $250,000, was a grant to fund the suite in full.

The suite was a finale of a longtime installment for the hospital says Joel Seligman, the vice chairperson of the hospital’s foundation of trustees.

“We’re finishing what has been seven years of planning and work, to provide this community with a state of the art emergency department,” Seligman said.

Senator Greg Ball was on hand to present the hospital with the check. Once he signed the check, Ball spoke of the need to support hospitals, saying that while they are integral to communities, each community is just as important in return.

“People have to realize that community hospitals like this, if they’re lucky, are operating on a margin of about 1 percent, plus or minus a little bit,” Ball said. “And any hit the wrong direction can put a great community hospital out of business. Joel and his entire team need to be applauded for their leadership.”

The machine is as up to date as can be, according to head of radiology Dr. Peter Khouri. The machine can scan an entire body in 15 seconds, along with making sure the radiation can be reduced if needed.

“I’m proud to say, with this new CT scan, we now can reduce the radiation exposure up to 50 percent, which is FDA validated in comparison to previous CT scans,” Khouri said. “So we can now state that we offer the lowest radiation emitting dose in the entire Westchester County with this scanner.”

Seligman emphasized the need for continued support for the hospital.

“We need friends like this, this kind of support, and we are extremely grateful,” Seligman said. (ARTICLE)

Mount Kisco, N.Y.– 2/2/2012—Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) will join patients and staff of Northern Westchester Hospital on Thursday to celebrate the newly constructed radiology imaging suite, which connects directly to the hospital ER, and to present a $250,000 grant for this much needed upgrade.

“With a lagging economy and continued budget cuts, we need to make sure that our healthcare facilities don’t fall through the cracks,” Senator Ball said. “This upgrade expands the kind of quality care that our community expects and deserves.”

Housed in this new imaging center are the very latest in CT and Radiography (X-Ray) technologies. Two Carestream wireless and filmless Direct Radiography systems are integrated with a Quantum Radiography suite and a GE Portable X-Ray unit. This system eliminates x-ray film and enables radiology images to be sent directly to high resolution computer monitors anywhere in the hospital for evaluation.

These images can also be accessed remotely by specialists outside of the hospital for consultation if needed. To complete the new imaging suite, a General Electric HD750 Dual Energy CT Scanning system was installed. In addition to delivering the lowest radiation dose available today, the dual energy capability enables clinicians to differentiate between hard and soft artery plaque, a leading cause of stroke and heart attack, all while eliminating the shadows and artifact images caused by implanted hardware, such as surgical screws and wires.

“A seamless integration between the Mary and David Boies Emergency Department and radiology is essential for providing rapid assessment of a patient’s injuries. Providing high quality images, with the least radiation exposure, creates a safe environment for patients, while enabling physicians to view high quality images needed for effective patient care,” commented David Natoli, Administrative Director of Imaging and Cardiology Services.

“Northern Westchester Hospital is a not-for-profit hospital, so community support and grants such as this, enable our medical experts to continue providing the high quality care that our patients have grown to expect,” stated Hatsy Brown-Vallar, President of the Northern Westchester Hospital Foundation.

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – State Senator Greg Ball has gone mobile.

Ball has created what he calls his “mobile office,” where he will travel to the various municipalities within his 40th Senate District and set up shop for a few hours in order to meet with constituents one on one to hear their ideas and concerns.

The first mobile office kicked off Wednesday afternoon at the Lewisboro Town Hall, where Ball made himself available from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. First in line to meet the senator was South Salem resident Malcolm Brown who spent nearly half an hour with Ball discussing the MTA payroll tax and drainage issues he’s been having on his street, a state-owned road, due to excavation.

“What I’m trying to do is be accessible at various hours in various communities,” Ball said. “Senior citizens and business owners can’t always make it to our offices, especially up in Albany.”

Ball said he wants to reach out to the broadest range of citizens so he’ll mix up the hours for his mobile offices. The next one will be held in Buchanan next Wednesday. He’ll return to Lewisboro again, but at a different time and different day of the week. It may include evening hours so people who work during the day will have a chance to meet with him.

Ball said he encourages residents to call their neighbors, bring their friends, and come out with questions or concerns the next time he’s in town with his mobile office. (ARTICLE)

MOUNT KISCO — Northern Westchester Hospital is getting a $250,000 state grant to help pay for its new radiology imaging suite.

Hospital officials will unveil the imaging center tomorrow, with the help of state Sen. Greg Ball, R-Patterson. Ball secured the state money for the hospital.

The imaging suite was the second phase in updating the hospital’s emergency department, an approximately $28 million project. It connects directly to the emergency room and technology allows doctors outside of the hospital to view the images.

“A seamless integration between the Mary and David Boies Emergency Department and radiology is essential for providing rapid assessment of a patient’s injuries. Providing high quality images, with the least radiation exposure, creates a safe environment for patients, while enabling physicians to view high quality images needed for effective patient care,”said David Natoli, administrative director of imaging and cardiology services.

Hospital spokesman Mark Vincent said the new radiology section was completed about two months ago. A ribbon-cutting will be held tomorrow, Vincent added, but the new section won’t be in use for a couple of more weeks until final state approvals are obtained.

“With a lagging economy and continued budget cuts, we need to make sure that our healthcare facilities don’t fall through the cracks. This upgrade expands the kind of quality care that our community expects and deserves,” Ball said.

The ribbon-cutting takes place tomorrow from 1:30 to 2 p.m. in the emergency room.

Calling on state legislators to support a ban on hydraulic fracturing, or “hydrofracking,” in New York state, a coalition of environmentalists were joined by both celebrities and concerned lawmakers during a rally in the Capitol Jan. 23.More than 600 New Yorkers from all regions of the state protested the process, which involves pumping a mixture of water, sand and chemicals into the ground to break up rock and release natural gas deposits.

While proponents tout hydofracking’s potential to create jobs and help the economy, opponents are trying to raise awareness of its potential to harm the environment.

Josh Fox, director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Gasland, which exposed water contamination by natural gas drilling in Pennsylvania and in western states, spoke at the event.

“The environmental costs of hydrofracking greatly outweigh its economic benefits,” said Fox, who supports a ban on the process. “It is very important for New York state to lead the nation in opposition to fracking.”

Last summer, Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposed lifting the state’s moratorium on hydrofracking. In his recent State of the State Address, however, the governor neglected to mention the process or the current review of proposed regulations by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Fox believes Cuomo will “do the right thing” on this issue.

“The governor is an intelligent man and I have confidence in him,” said Fox. “He must know that for Ed Rendell, the former Pennsylvania governor, and Tom Corbett, the current governor, hydrofracking will be their landmarks.”

Debra Winger, a three-time Academy Award-nominated actress, reflected on how being a child of the 1960s inspired her to join the anti-fracking movement.

“I would always see these commercials for clean burning gas and I thought the blue flame the gas would create was so beautiful,” said Winger, who starred in films such as An Officer and a Gentleman and Terms of Endearment. “Now, however, I see all of the dangers behind that blue flame.”

Sen. Greg Ball, R-Patterson, who recently proposed legislation to impose a one-year moratorium on hydrofracking, called on members of both the Occupy movement and the Tea Party to hold the natural gas industry accountable. He also offered optimistic praise to the governor.

“I believe in the genuine goodness of our governor,” said Ball. “If he went to Pennsylvania and saw firsthand all of the negative impacts of hydrofracking, I believe he’d be on board with us.” (ARTICLE)
