Senator Greg Ball Kicks-Off Town Hall Tour in Lewisboro

Lewisboro, N.Y. – (07/25/11) – From sky high property taxes to exploding pensions costs, elected leaders were armed with questions as Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) kicked off his Town Hall Tour in Lewisboro, N.Y.  The tour was designed to provide communities with an update following this year’s legislative session. Residents and elected officials were also encouraged to ask questions about issues facing New York or affecting their communities.

“No one is a bigger critic of Albany than me,” said Senator Ball as he kicked off the presentation before the Lewisboro Town Board and a number of residents. “But think of what we accomplished this legislative session and with bi-partisan support. The progress we made in Albany this year was significant,” added Ball.

Senator Ball offered an update on issues including the recently passed Property Tax Cap and Mandate Relief bill, the balanced New York State budget, the MTA Tax Repeal legislation, homeland security initiatives and issues affecting women and animals.

Concerns over rising pension costs, in a town that recently saw a 12% spike in its New York State retirement contribution, dominated much of the follow-up discussion between Senator Ball and members of the Lewisboro Town Board.

“Towns have been left holding the bag as a result of out of control pension costs,” said Lewisboro Supervisor Charles Duffy. “It crushed corporate America twenty years ago, and unless we redefine contribution levels at the state level, the New York will suffer the same fate,” added Duffy.

Senator Ball also fielded questions from the board about the town’s crumbling infrastructure, compounded by the need to cut the highway department by 10% in the last town budget. When asked by Councilman Daniel Welsh about the state’s commitment to rebuilding roads, Senator Ball promised to fight for funding for any specific projects while noting that the region’s share of state transportation dollars has decreased significantly over recent years. With the tough budget decisions made in Albany this year, Senator Ball stated he was hopeful new revenues will be generated for future infrastructure projects.

The Town Hall Tour will be making stops in all 22 towns in the Senator’s 40th District. Additional stops are planned this week in the towns of Patterson (7/27) and Southeast (7/28). A full list of scheduled tour dates can be found here.
