MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – Mount Pleasant Schools Superintendent Susan Guiney and Pleasantville resident Janice Gambino have been named as honorees for State Sen. Greg Ball’s Women of Distinction award, along with 22 others from the New York State Senate’s 40th District.

As superintendent of the the Mount Pleasant Central School District, Guiney has created a dynamic learning community and has also led the district’s efforts to create and implement a five-year strategic plan, according to Ball’s website.  Guiney is a member of the Westchester County Board of Legislators Domestic Violence Council, the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents, the New York State Council of Superintendents’ Women and Minority Scholarship Committee, the Lower Hudson Council of Women in Administration, and also volunteers for the ToughMan Triathlon.

Gambino, with help from her family and the Pleasantville community, established the Tina Shaina Gambino Memorial Foundation in memory of her daughter, after Tina’s death during her senior year at Pleasantville High School, according to Ball’s website.  She “built an extraordinary program that honors the memory of a young woman who was widely respected as generous, good-natured and infused with the spirit of giving.”

In March, Ball (R,C,I – Patterson) asked residents of his district – which includes parts of Westchester, Duchess and Putnam counties – to submit nominations.

“While all those nominated have worked and volunteered without want of recognition, their efforts have not gone without notice or appreciation. The diversity and depth of their work speaks to the amount of time and dedication each has volunteered on behalf of and in support of a simple truth; that all change is local,” Ball’s statement said. “Each took it upon herself to respond to some compelling community need. These women did not wait or idle when the opportunity for real change presented itself. Instead, each used her own unique talents and skills to respond to an issue or challenge in her community that merited action.”

The Women Of Distinction Hall of Fame ceremony will be held Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Putnam County Emergency Services Building in Carmel. The honorees will also be included on a Traveling Wall of Fame that will be on display throughout the district.
