BREWSTER N.Y. – State Sen. Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson), is seeking highly motivated and determined students to join a student advisory council he formed last year.
The council works on issues important to students in the 40th Senate District that Ball represents. The district includes Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, Yorktown, Peekskill, Brewster, Croton, Mount Kisco Chappaqua and Pleasantville. Last year, the council focused on combating bullying, texting while driving, social media privacy and minimum wage increases. Students also traveled to Albany and had the ability to introduce, debate and vote on legislation on the state Senate floor.
“When I was a student I wanted to get involved but felt my elected officials were unapproachable,” Ball said in a prepared statement. “I really wanted to change that perception once elected. It’s so important that we encourage our youth to get active and involved in our communities.”
Local school officials have praised the initiative at getting students involved in state government.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for kids throughout Peekskill to get a firsthand experience of how state government works,” said Peekskill City School District Superintendent Jim Willis in a prepared statement. “I salute Senator Ball for establishing this student advisory council and encourage all our students to get involved.”
