DAILY VOICE: WESTCHESTER OFFICIALS TO ANNOUNCE VETERANS COUNSELING EXPANSION

by Nathan Bruttell

OSSINING, N.Y. – State Senators, county officials and veterans groups will join in Ossining on Thursday to announce the expansion of a new program aimed at assisting veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Westchester.

The Dwyer Program, named after PFC Joseph Dwyer, provides for peer-to-peer counseling between veterans suffering from PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury.  The state recently accepted the expansion as part of its 2013-14 budget. Last year, the program operated in Suffolk, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Jefferson counties. With the expansion, the Dwyer Program will be available in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.

State Sen. David Carlucci (D-Rockland, Ossining) and Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino will be joined by Chairman and State Sen. Greg Ball (R,C,I-Patterson) and several other local representatives at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ossining American Legion Post 506 at 58 S. Highland Ave. to announce details of the expansion.

“With the rising number of returning veterans suffering from ailments like traumatic brain injury, we must do everything in our power to give our returning troops the services and programs that they need,” said Ball in a press release.  “The expansion of the Dwyer program to Putnam, Westchester and other counties in the state will allow even more veterans to receive these services to help them transition back into civilian life.” (ARTICLE)
