PAWLING, N.Y. – Former Pawling Town Clerk Rose Clarkson has been named to state Sen. Greg Ball’s 40th Senate District Women of Distinction Hall of Fame.

Twenty-two women from throughout the district have been nominated for the honor.

Ball (R-Patterson) created the Women of Distinction Hall of Fame to honor outstanding women from throughout the 40th Senate District. In March, he asked every town, village and city in his district to submit a nomination. This is the second year that Ball has run the program.

“The Women of Distinction ceremony was a project I launched in recognition of Women’s History Month and inspired by the accomplished and outstanding women I have had the privilege of collaborating with through my current tenure serving the people of the 40th Senate District,” Ball said. “While all those nominated have worked and volunteered without want of recognition, their efforts have not gone without notice or appreciation.”

Clarkson grew up in the town of Pawling and served as town clerk for 25 years, retiring at age 77. While serving as the Pawling school tax collector, Ball said, Clarkson was known throughout the community as “the only person people would actually be happy to see when they paid their taxes.”

A past Girl Scout leader and treasurer of the Pawling Free Library, Clarkson has shown dedication to the field of education and learning. Along with her father, Clarkson was an original member and founder of the “4 M’s Group” of the Pawling Methodist Church. She was also instrumental in starting the Dutchess County Town Clerk’s Association and is still a volunteer at the Pawling Resource Center and the Pawling Chamber of Commerce. She is a mother of four, grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of eight.

“The diversity and depth of [the nominees’] work speaks to the amount of time and dedication each has volunteered on behalf of and in support of a simple truth; that all change is local,” Ball said. “Each took it upon herself to respond to some compelling community need. These women did not wait or idle when the opportunity for real change presented itself. Instead, each used her own unique talents and skills to respond to an issue or challenge in her community that merited action.”

The Women of Distinction Hall of Fame celebration will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Putnam County Emergency Services Building in Carmel. The honorees also will be included on a Traveling Wall of Fame that will be on display throughout the 40th District. (ARTICLE)
