MAHOPAC, NY- The Salomone family of Mahopac and the Christiansen family of Somers were honored Tuesday for their work in raising local awareness about drug abuse.
Both families have lost sons to drug overdoses, and teamed up to host a series of community educational forums called Drug Crisis In Our Backyard to promote awareness and share resources and support with families affected by addiction. The special recognition dinner was sponsored by the National Fraternal Order of Police Stephen P. Driscoll Memorial Lodge and was attended by Sheriff Don Smith and Senator Greg Ball, among others.
“The Salomone and Christiansen families have been through extraordinarily difficult times and are to be applauded for truly doing God’s work. On behalf of the entire community and on behalf of the families and parents currently struggling with this horrific battle I salute these great families for their continuing efforts to raise awareness about this epidemic,” Senator Ball said.“I have worked with my colleagues to recently pass and enact a piece of legislation aimed at curbing local drug abuse, but we must do much, much more. Families like the Salomones and Christiansens have drawn attention to this once taboo issue and have undoubtedly saved many lives through prevention, education and support without ever really knowing the extent of their positive impact, which is far, widespread and appreciated by all.” (ARTICLE)
