Brewster, N.Y. – (10/28/2013) – Senator Greg Ball, (R,C,I-Patterson) Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, has accepted the nomination of Laurence Gibbs from Putnam Valley into his 3rd Annual Veterans’ Hall of Fame.

Senator Greg Ball created the Veterans’ Hall of Fame to honor outstanding veterans from throughout the 40th Senate District. Each veteran will be honored at a ceremony hosted on November 21. 2013 at Mahopac Falls Elementary School and will also be included on a traveling wall that will tour local municipalities and schools throughout the 40th district.

“I am honored to accept Larry Gibbs into the Veterans’ Hall of Fame. When I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gibbs, he showed me pictures of his combat in Vietnam where he bravely served in the Tet Offensive for which he received numerous medals of honor,” said Senator Greg Ball. “Mr. Gibbs continues to be an active member of our community today through his involvement in VFW Post #391 as well as the Boy Scouts of America where he serves as both a Troop Leader and Scoutmaster.”

Mr. Gibbs was nominated for Senator Ball’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame by Putnam County Legislator Sam Oliverio.

“Larry Gibbs is a soft spoken gentleman who rarely speaks about his time in service. Yet Larry served in Vietnam at the time of the Tet Offensive and was instrumental in keeping our Huey Helicopters in the air as a Crew Chief,” said Legislator Sam Oliverio. “He also protected our troops on the ground by manning the M-60 machine guns mounted on those Hueys.”

Specialist Laurence Gibbs served in the U.S. Army, where he trained as both a Crew Chief on Huey Helicopters and a M-60 gunner. Specialist Gibbs served in the Vietnam War, where he was part of the rescue missions during the Tet Offensive. He received numerous medals, including the Good Conduct Award, Military Justice Certification, the Vietnam Active Duty Medal and the Sharpshooter’s Award. Specialist Lawrence served in the Air Force Reserves for many years, and is heavily involved in both the VFW Post 391 and the Boys Scouts of America.

Towns, villages and cities throughout Senator Greg Ball’s district are currently in the process of selecting their nominees. If you would like to nominate someone, please contact your local town board or city council or contact Senator Ball’s office at (845) 279-3773.
