Brewster, N.Y. – (08/05/11) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) stopped by the Town of Patterson Recreation Center today to present a $100,000 check to the center to be used toward air conditioning and flooring upgrades. The money, secured by Senator Ball through a state grant, will allow the center to move forward on badly needed infrastructure upgrades.
“In tough economic times like these, many working families cannot afford those vacations and gym memberships. From karate classes to summer camps, this recreation center is used year-round by more than 30 organizations, and is open 80 hours a week,” said Senator Ball. “These upgrades will go a long way in continuing a community based tradition of providing essential services to the working families and taxpaying residents of the Town of Patterson,” added Ball.
The Town of Patterson Recreation Center serves the needs of thousands of people in Putnam County. Currently, the center is not operating at maximum potential due to the lack of air conditioning and dilapidated floors in the over 10,000 square foot gymnasium. Air conditioning was not installed when the center was built and the floor has exceeded its life expectancy.
“I would like to express great thanks to Senator Ball for his perseverance and determination in acquiring a $100,00 grant from New York State to be applied to our facility upgrades. The money will be used to offset the costs associated with installation of air conditioning, and a new floor in the recreation center gymnasium,” said Town of Patterson Recreation Director Matthew Chibbaro who has been concerned about potential safety hazards associated with the lack of air conditioning during the hot summer months, as well as safety hazards associated with the floors.
“When I learned of the needs at our local recreation center, I immediately reached out to Senator Ball. The Senator responded immediately and made this happen. We could not have done it without him,” said Patterson Town Councilman Joe Capasso. “This grant will go a long way in making the center the gem of our community without further burdening local taxpayers,” added Capasso.
“As a father of four children who have gone through the Carmel School District, my family has made use of the facility for various programs,” said Patterson Town Councilman Kevin Burns. “I would like to thank the Senator for his efforts on behalf of our town. These improvements will be enjoyed by all of the citizens of Patterson who make use of the recreation center, and the grant will go a long way to defraying the costs of these improvements without additional cost to our local taxpayers,” added Burns.
The installation of the air conditioning unit, as well as flooring upgrades, are expected to be completed sometime in September.
