Millbrook Independent: New York State Senator Greg Ball awarded Amenia a $100,000 grant

On June 30, New York State Senator Greg Ball awarded Amenia a $100,000 grant adding to a 2009 $600,000 grant for a “Trail to the Train” project to extend the Harlem Valley Rail Trail 3,500 linear feet from the Wassaic Metro-North station into the Hamlet of Wassaic.

The Amenia Town Board sent Requests For Qualifications (RFQs) to engineering firms and received 14 responses. According to the 2010 RFQ, the trail will first go along Route 22, then proceed down the railroad tracks into downtown Wassaic.

Companies considered for the design of the project included a local landscape architecture firm called Mark K Morrison Associates and a Westchester-based engineering company called WSP Sells. Antonia Shoumatoff, Chair of the Trail to the Train Committee, who wrote the grant for the project with input from Sharon Kroeger is a strong proponent for Morrison to spearhead the design.
