BREWSTER – Lawmakers are pushing for laws prohibiting publication of gun owners’ information after a controversial decision to publish pistol permit owners’ names and addresses.

The Journal News published an interactive map last week that featured thousands of pistol permit owners’ names and addresses across Rockland and Westchester counties. The newspaper’s editors say that the public has a right to know where guns are in the aftermath of the Newtown, Conn. school shooting.

State Sen. Greg Ball says he and other officials want to prevent the media from posting a similar gun map of Putnam County. He also wants a law in place to prevent future publication.

Putnam County officials are planning to hold a news conference Thursday to announce they will not release similar pistol permit records to The Journal News. (ARTICLE)
