Briarcliff Manor sixth-grader Sarah Raphael has won the 2013 New York State Senate Earth Day Poster Contest.

In announcing the winner on Tuesday, state Sen. Greg Ball (R-Brewster) said in a news release that the contest seeks to teach students “about the values and principles of Earth Day, and demonstrate their commitment to the cause.”

The theme of this year’s contest was “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” Raphael’s winning entry depicts multicolored figures standing on the earth, shouting out environmental statements such as “Say no to trash!” and “Help make the world a better place!”

Raphael attends Briarcliff Middle School. She is a straight-A student and a member of the Westchester Ballet Company, according to the release. (ARTICLE)
