News12: Ex-state Sen. Vincent Leibell begins prison sentence

(07/13/11) YONKERS – Disgraced former state Sen. Vincent Leibell is spending his first night in a Pennsylvania prison tonight.

The once-powerful Republican from Putnam County will serve 21 months on a federal corruption conviction.

Ron Clarke, of Brewster, says he’s still shaking his head over the demise of Leibell’s career.

“I was shocked that a man of his character, that people loved, was capable of that kind of deceit,” Clarke says.

Leibell pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges last December. An investigation revealed that Leibell extorted money from lawyers at local nonprofit groups that he controlled.
