Senator Ball Reminds Residents About Importance of Storm Preparedness

Brewster, N.Y. – (08/25/11) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) is reaching out to residents ahead of Hurricane Irene. Forecasters are expecting the storm will reach New York State this weekend, and bring with it the possibility of heavy rains and high winds. In anticipation of what could be a significant weather event, Senator Ball is reminding local families about the importance of storm preparedness.

“I’m not saying you should board up your windows and get out of town. But Mother Nature is very unpredictable. The best thing we can do is be prepared for that unpredictability,” said Ball.

Ball says it’s critically important that families have an evacuation plan and supplies in the event they are without electricity, fresh food or water for a period of time. Below is a list of supplies, as recommended by the American Red Cross:

  • Water (at least 3 day supply; 1 gallon per person per day)
  • Food (at least 3 day supply of non-perishable food)
  • Flashlights
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • Batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Medications (7 day supply)
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items
  • Copies of personal documents (list of medications, proof address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)
  • Cell phones with charges
  • Family and emergency contact information
  • Extra cash
  • Emergency blanket
  • Map(s) of the area
  • Pet supplies (collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, water, bowl)
  • Tools and supplies to secure your home
  • Extra set of keys to your car and home
  • Extra clothing and shoes
  • Rain gear
  • Insect repellant and sunscreen
  • Camera to photograph damage

The New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) is keeping close tabs on the storm and will lead all emergency responses, should they be needed.
