Brewster, N.Y. – 6/11/2013 – Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson) honored Ruina Zhang with the New York State Senate Youth Leadership Recognition Award at his district office in Brewster, NY.
“Ruina has truly showed me what it is like to overcome adversity. She came to this country and within two years not only learned the language but was in AP English classes. I commend her for her dedication to her academics, community, and school. I wish her the best of luck in her future,” said Senator Ball.
The Youth Leadership Recognition Award Program is designed to highlight and congratulate well-rounded students who excel academically and have exhibited leadership through extracurricular or volunteer activities.
Ruina came to the United States in 9th grade as a shy, timid girl. It was not long before she displayed her academic excellence and amazing talent of playing the Piano. In her junior and senior years she was in AP English and ended up the Salutatorian of her class. During her time in high school she has won many awards including The Most Outstanding Student in AP Chemistry, AP Biology and Honors Chemistry.
Ruina does not only strive for excellence in the classroom but outside it as well. She has organized pajama drives for needy children, donated her own hard earned money to Nicaraguan children, and worked with Costa Rican girls during the summer. In school she is the co-president of Students Taking Action Today Club, the co-captain of the Girls Varsity Tennis Team, the resource officer of Somers math team and the editor of the school newspaper. She was one of 12 pianists in New York State selected to perform in the Piano Showcase concert in Rochester.
A total of 7 students from throughout Senator Greg Ball’s district have received the award.
