Carmel, N.Y. – (3/30/12) – Over 30 women from throughout the Hudson Valley were honored at Senator Greg Ball’s (R, C – Patterson) Women of Distinction Hall of Fame. Among them was, Thelma Barlow who was recognized for her distinguished volunteer service and civic commitment as a Woman of Distinction representing the Town of Somers, New York.

Created and hosted by Senator Ball, The Women Of Distinction Hall of Fame was designed to honor outstanding women from throughout the 40th Senate District. Each city, town and village within the Senator’s district was asked to nominate a woman to be honored at the event. All the nominees were formally honored and inducted in the Hall of Fame at a district-wide ceremony at The Donald B. Smith, Putnam County Emergency Services Building in Carmel, NY.

For 26 years, Thelma Barlow has served as the Crossing Guard for Somers Intermediate School. And, for 35 years, Ms. Barlow has served as Assistant District Commissioner for Somers Boy Scouts, and was the first Somers woman to complete the Boy Scout Leader training program. Ms. Barlow also volunteers as a member of the Somers Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and as the photographer for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Somers Volunteer Fire Department.

Ms. Barlow has earned the 1999 Yorktown Masons Lodge “General Douglas MacArthur” Award for exemplary service to her community’s youth, the Scouters Key Commission, the Den Leader’s Award, the District Award of Merit, the Silver Award, and the United Owners of Shenorock “Outstanding Citizen” Award. In 1989, Somers Central School District honored Ms. Barlow for her accomplishment in establishing a restricted passing zone on Route 139 in front of Primrose Elementary School and Somers High School.

“The woman who are here today were nominated by their communities, hand-picked because they chose a path of leadership, living a life of service before self,” said Senator Greg Ball. “Each one of these women here today is so well deserving of this honor because they have built a reputation of action, compassion and integrity a path that that stands as an example to all.”
