Brewster, N.Y. – 8/05/2013 – With a heavy heart and great sadness, Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson) has announced the recent passing of Hazel Martinez, a Patterson resident and Gold Star Mother.

“No parent should ever have to bury a child and I cannot imagine her deep pain and sadness. Hazel Martinez was a remarkable woman. She was a prime example of the importance of contributing to the community and helping those who are less fortunate. Her work should lead as an example for all of us,” said Senator Greg Ball. “I extend my thoughts and prayers to her family and wish them peace as they mourn the loss of a remarkable woman.”

Senator Ball previously honored Hazel at a Mothers Day Brunch hosted in May of 2012 and more recently honored her as the 2013 Putnam County New York State Senior Citizen Of The Year.

Hazel Martinez was born in Pennsylvania and lived in Putnam Lake for 66 years. She worked for 8 years at Green Chimneys as a social worker. Among her achievements, she was the proud mother of three sons. Unfortunately one son, PFC Robert Gracia, was killed during the Vietnam War. Since her son lost his life in the service of his country, with a heavy heart, she became a member of the American Gold Star Mothers organization. Hazel was a member of the Golden Agers of Patterson and has been a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 9257 of Putnam Lake for 35 years. She volunteered for 5 years at the Castle Point Veterans Hospital where she brought clothes and items to help those in need. Hazel volunteered her time for close to 50 years.
