Created and hosted by Senator Ball, the Veterans’ Hall of Fame is designed to honor outstanding veterans from throughout the 40th Senate District. The wall is touring local municipalities throughout the 40th district.
Ball stressed the purpose of having the wall at a school to teach students about the personal sacrifices the nation’s veterans are making on behalf of their communities.
“These veterans are real life heroes and deserve to be thanked and appreciated. Yet I also think it really helps the students to recognize that so many people before them have really contributed to keeping the principles of democracy, liberty and freedom alive. The school is to be applauded for welcoming this tribute and I am so proud to see these kids pay such great respect to these veterans who have lived such a selfless life, both in uniform and in their civilian lives,” Senator Ball said. “I think it helps to make history come alive for them.”
Somers High School Senior, Kevin Burzasi led the ceremony with pledge of allegiance. Kevin has enlisted in the Army and will deploy for basic combat training September 14th.
“I believe this wall is a huge symbol of honor. It really does show the great acts and sacrifices as well as some of the amazing achievements that many have made,” Kevin said. “I think it really puts into perspective that some really do give all they can and truly make a difference in the world.”
“We are very proud to have Senator Ball’s Veterans Hall of Fame here in Somers. We are especially proud of our towns Veteran, Stephen Moravick, but we honor all of the Veterans on the wall,” said Somers Town Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy. “We are very glad to house the wall for this period of time and I encourage all of our residents to stop by and see it.”
“Having this wall here in the school is a great way to have our students put a face to the price of freedom and democracy,” said Somers High School Principal Irene Perrella. “We welcome it and are honored to have it here at Somers High School.”
The wall will remain on display at Somers High School for one week before it is moved to Brewster High School on April 20th.
