Brewster, N.Y. – (12/15/2011) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) was at the Mount Kisco Metro-North train station Thursday morning to demand a full forensic audit of the MTA’s accounting practices, along with a full repeal of the MTA payroll tax.

“After years of leading the charge to repeal the MTA payroll tax, I am thrilled with the governor’s leadership on making this initial repeal a priority and reality,” said Senator Ball who spearheaded the bill (S50002) that currently repeals the job-killing MTA payroll tax for 80% of the businesses that pay it. That bill was successfully passed by the New York State Senate on December 9, 2011. “The repeal of the MTA payroll tax was just the first step, I will continue with my demands for forensic accounting to protect middle class, working families like mine who are struggling.”

Senator Ball also said that it’s time to permanently eliminate the MTA payroll tax— not just for 80% of businesses, but for everyone.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that if we conduct a forensic audit of the MTA accounting practices we will uncover hundreds of millions of dollars in savings and we will be able to fully repeal the MTA payroll tax once and for all.”

Somers Town Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy and Carmel Town Supervisor Kenneth Schmitt joined Senator Greg Ball in Mount Kisco, and echoed his demands.

“My municipal government is still not exempt from the payroll tax,” Murphy explained. “This is just one more unfunded mandate that we’re getting from state government that we can’t afford to pay. What it takes to resolve it is forensic accounting and that’s what needs to be done.”

Schmitt thanked Senator Ball for holding the MTA accountable for their poor accounting practices, “This is absolutely ridiculous that our residents have to shoulder the burden of the MTA. It’s wrong, it’s not right, it’s an attack on the residents.”

Senator Ball has been fighting to repeal the tax since it was instated in 2009. As a member of the New York State Assembly, Ball introduced legislation to repeal the tax and audit the MTA.
