SENATOR GREG BALL HONORS GOLD STAR MOTHERS AND MOMS THROUGHOUT HUDSON VALLEY WITH FREE MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH

Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. – (5/12/12) –This past Saturday, Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) hosted a free Mothers Day Brunch to honor over 150 moms throughout the Hudson Valley and to specifically honor Gold Star Mother’s at the Muriel H. Morabito Community Center in Cortlandt Manor.

“Mother’s Day is a special holiday to pay tribute to the wonderful women we cherish and love,” said Senator Greg Ball. “Today we are paying our respects to these mothers who will not be able to celebrate Mother’s Day with their lost son or daughter, because their family has made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country safe and free.”

A Gold Star Mother is a Mother who has lost a son or daughter in war. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in the window of their homes. The Service Flag had a star for each family member in the United States Armed Forces. Living servicemen were represented by a blue star, and those who had lost their lives were represented by a gold star.

Among the Gold Star Mothers that were honored, were, Renate DeAngelis, Vivian Allen, Mary Crusie, Hazel Martinez, Marie Ladouceur, Michele McNaughton and Chrystyna Kestler.

McNaughton, who lost her son who served in the U.S. Army on August 2nd, 2005 in Iraq, said Mother’s Day has never been the same.

“This means so much that Gold Star Mothers are honored,” said Michele. “It means a lot that we were invited today, that Senator Ball wants to include the Gold Star Mothers and that he remembers our sons and daughters.”

Senator Ball’s Lewisboro Women of Distinction, Joann Vasi also attended Senator Ball’s brunch with her husband of 42 years, Sal Vasi.

“I think it’s fantastic, it really is,” said Joann Vasi. “I think Senator Ball is a fantastic person to honor all of us. I feel honored to be a part of all these ladies of distinction.”

“It is certainly a distinct honor and privilege to not only be here but to have the Senator recognize all that mother’s do as the bedrock of the family,” said Jeannette Phillips, Peekskill resident. “To be able to be here and be honored is a certainly a pleasure this morning.”
