Brewster, N.Y. – 02/24/2014 – Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson), Chairman of the New York State Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, issued the following statement after residents received unexpectedly high Con Edison energy bills.

“My office has received a large number of calls from Con Edison customers, including dozens of seniors, that have received unexpectedly high energy bills from Con Edison. While I understand the weather has been extremely cold and energy costs are continually rising, constituents have contacted my office with a bill that is twice as high, or more, as last year’s bill. We have seniors on fixed incomes and this type of surprise billing is forcing some to choose between medication, food and paying this huge bill. A 100% increase is absolutely unbearable for senior citizen on a fixed income struggling to stay in their homes,” said Senator Greg Ball. “All I am asking is that commonsense and common decency prevail. Let it be clear, I am glad to hear that Con Edison has made a good faith effort to allow customers to spread their energy costs out over a 12 month period, yet these sky-high energy bills are unbelievable. Our community, and these struggling seniors, deserve an explanation and I look forward to working with Con Edison to providing my constituents with the relief they need.”
