Tax Cap Lowered From 2 Percent To 1.66 Percent
Brewster, N.Y. – 8/12/2013 – New guidelines recently released by the state comptroller’s office have revealed that because of a decline in inflation, the state’s property tax cap in 2014 will be lowered from 2 percent to 1.66 percent. Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson) has issued the following statement regarding the tightened tax cap.
“Sky high property taxes have made the American dream of homeownership a nightmare for many New Yorkers. The 2 percent tax cap was a big step in the right direction, but to deliver real and lasting property tax relief there is much more still to be done. This recent decrease, even below the 2% threshold, shows that this cap is serious and all levels of government better get serious about cutting spending and taxes. All throughout New York State we must work diligently to right size government and stabilize taxes,” said Senator Greg Ball. “To accomplish these things, Albany must immediately make good on its commitment to lower taxes by delivering real unfunded mandate relief to our local governments and schools. I have developed a Mandate Relief Advisory Council and will be hosting an immediate and emergency Unfunded Mandate and Tax Relief Roundtable to dig deeper into these unfunded mandates. From burdensome testing requirements, to local reporting nightmares and mountains of administrative bureaucracy, there is a great deal that Albany can and must still do to lighten the administrative stranglehold on our local governments and schools. Simply put, there are a myriad of opportunities for Albany to deliver relief, and we should get back to Albany to do exactly that.”
Senator Ball’s Mandate Relief Advisory Council, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education Senator John Flanagan, and Mahopac Central School District Superintendent Thomas Manko will be hosting an Unfunded Mandate and Tax Relief Roundtable at 11 AM on September 7, 2013, at Mahopac High School, located at 421 Baldwin Place Rd, in Mahopac, NY.
The roundtable agenda will include reviewing a survey of unfunded mandates, the mandate relief resolutions submit to Governor Cuomo’s Mandate Relief Council by schools and municipalities in the 40th Senate District and the mandates frequently raised in discussion with school administrators, municipalities, board members and the public.
