Brewster, N.Y. – 01/28/2014 – Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson), Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, will collaborate with Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith, Senator Ball’s Student Advisory Council and two local families who recently lost their sons to drug addiction to host a Drug Crisis Roundtable at the Carmel Town Hall on Thursday February 13, 2014, at 6:00 PM.

The Salomone and Christiansen families, both of whom lost their sons to drug addiction organized a series of forums titled, “Drug Crisis In Our Backyard.” The purpose of these forums are to promote awareness and provide resources and support to those individuals and their families affected by drug addiction.

“The Salomone and Christiansen families have truly been doing amazing work. I salute them for their continuing efforts to raise awareness about this epidemic. I am honored to join with them, the Sheriff and my Student Advisory Council to continue their mission,” said Senator Greg Ball. “I have also worked with my colleagues to recently pass and enact a piece of legislation aimed at curbing prescription drug abuse. Families like the Salomones and Christiansens have drawn attention to this issue and have ultimately helped us pass this bill to begin combating prescription drug abuse. However, there is so much more to be done.”

The law has created a tracking system known as the Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing Act, or “I-STOP”. The law has also modernized and improved the real time Prescription Monitoring Program so practitioners and pharmacists can securely and easily access, allowing them to view their patients’ controlled substance histories.

Carol Christiansen, co-founder of Drug Crisis In Our Backyard, simply said, “While there is life there is still hope!”

Senator Ball’s roundtable will aim to promote awareness, and provide resources and support to those individuals affected by drug addition, specifically students and their families.

At the roundtable, participants will also discuss prevention, treatment and recovery planning. Attendees will be encouraged to use this information to create a proactive plan in dealing with potential drug prevention, and addiction issues within their own families or circle of friends.
