WESTCHESTER COUNTY N.Y. – Fifty local World War II veterans from Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties plan to visit the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. next month as part of a free trip planned by State Sen. Greg Ball and two military groups.

The trip, scheduled for Sept. 17, is sponsored by Heroes in Transition, a nonprofit that provides assistance to U.S. veterans that is not readily available from other government agencies. Two chartered buses will take the area veterans to the memorial, where they will place a wreath in honor of all World War II veterans from Ball’s 40th Senate District.

Ball has pledged to host the trip free of charge for all the veterans who attend, according to a news release. Around $2,200 has already been raised but members of the community are asked to help the cause reach $5,000 before the trip.

“It is so wonderful to see the community come together to help send these heroes to see the national monument built in their honor,” Ball said.

In setting up the trip, Heroes in Transition and Ball (R,C,I – Patterson) also received help from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 21.

Heroes in Transition is accepting donations to help pay for the busing and food for the veterans. Anyone interested in donating can go to the Heroes in Transition’s website and make a donation online. Checks can also be made payable to Heroes In Transition and sent to 22 Bates Road., Suite 135, Mashpee, MA 02649.

Donors can choose to sponsor an individual World War II veteran’s trip for $100. They can also sponsor anything from a lunch for $25, all the way up to a bus for $1,000. Those who sponsor a veteran will receive a signed thank you letter along with a picture and video from the trip.

“It is our honor to be able to help these American heroes finally see the World War II memorial and also find peace by being able to pay their final respects to their dear friends and fellow military servicemen and women who lost their lives in World War II,” said Heroes in Transition President Michael Warshaw.
