For the second year in a row, the Katonah-Lewisboro school district is getting an $80,000 grant to pay for its school resource officer (SRO), state Sen. Greg Ball’s office announced Tuesday.

The grant will fund the SRO for the 2013-14 year.

Ball, noting the Sandy Hook School shooting in Newtown, CT and similar events, argued that having an SRO is important.

“In the wake of the horrific Sandy Hook event and other recent school shootings, I believe having a school resource officer is a vital tool to prevent these tragedies. I recently hosted two school safety roundtables and it has become clear that having police officers present in schools serves as not only a deterrent for evil but has proven to be very positive for our children,” Ball (R-Patterson), said in a press release. “I am happy to deliver again for the Katonah-Lewisboro School District and will continue to work with community partners to bring as much of our tax money back from Albany, home where it belongs.”

Michael Jumper, Katonah-Lewisboro’s assistant superintendent for business, is thankful for the support.

“During this time of fiscal constraint we are very pleased to receive this financial support,” Jumper said in a statement that accompanied Ball’s announcement. “Through the cooperative efforts of Senator Ball, the Town of Lewisboro and the school district, these funds will continue to be used to pay for our School Resource Officer.”

Ball’s district includes three of the four towns that overlap with the school district: Lewisboro, Pound Ridge and North Salem. (ARTICLE)
