Times-Herald: Lack of burial plots for veterans looms

7/4/2011 - Since the days when battles of the American Revolution were fought here, people in the mid-Hudson have sought to honor in death those local residents who have served the nation in uniform.

But the thousands of local veterans far outnumber the plots in official veterans cemeteries across the region — even accounting for those who seek private burials. …

However, state Sen. Greg Ball is sponsoring legislation that would allow New York to apply for federal grant money to establish additional veterans cemeteries.

There are seven national veterans cemeteries in New York, established by the Department of Veterans Affairs, but none are in the Hudson Valley.

Ball’s spokeswoman, Ali Skinner, said this was among many bills that unfortunately were not acted on before the session ended last week, but that it could be taken up later this year. (READ MORE)
