TimesUnion: Senator Ball advocates for four-legged friends.

06/21/2011 - The Times Union’s blogs are filled with plenty of commentary on controversial legislation that may or not be passed in these waning moments of the state’s legislative session.  This is not one of them (I don’t think).  You see the legislature passed a bill that I can’t imagine anyone opposing.  S.3237a/A.4407a was passed today by the Assembly after already passing in the Senate.  The bill will increase penalties for activities related to animal fighting.  When I say animal fighting we’re really talking about dog fighting and cock fighting, but there could certainly be other forms. …

There is a good lesson to be learned from the passage of this bill; sometimes legislators do listen to the people.  This is a bill that had been around for a while, but this year was the focus of several group’s legislative efforts.  I participated in two lobbying days this year that were designed to influence legislators to pass stricter dog fighting measures.  The first was ‘Humane Lobby Day’ sponsored by HSUS and more recently Animal Advocacy Day sponsored by Assemblyman Jim Tedisco and Senator Greg Ball.  To be clear, this was not a day for paid lobbyists to make back room deals.  These were days when concerned animal lovers from across the state came together in Albany to give a voice to animals.  Just regular people, having their say. 1. Joe says:

Greg Ball is a total phony when it comes to animal protections. A few years a go he killed a goat just to get publicity for his campaign for State Assembly. He targets anyone in his district who advocates for animal protection by funding and running the animal-killing crazies to run against them. then he pretends he’s for expanded rights – don’t believe this chronic lying politician!

As a constituent, I am unclear why you chose to listen to these “regular people” on this issue and not to those of us who wanted your support on Marriage Equality. Shame.
