Mahopac, N.Y. – (11/12/11) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, along with volunteers hosted a free thanksgiving dinner for close to 600 veterans and their families at the Mahopac Fire House.
In total over 200 volunteers worked together to organize the dinner from the planning stages to the day of the event. In addition to the volunteers there were nineteen local business that donated food, beverages and decorations, including a total of 110 turkeys. Students from Primrose Elementary School decorated placemats for each veteran to take home. Local girl scouts, boy scouts and the Mahopac football team were also in attendance helping serve food and wait tables.
As the veterans entered the firehouse on Saturday volunteers gave each guest a standing ovation to thank them for their service. “When I walked in I was absolutely blown away, my eyes are still damp. It is really touching; I haven’t gotten a thank you like this in years,” said Bert Sheri who served in the US Navy.
Andres Gil who served during the Persian Gulf War crisis said, “I was quite flattered and surprised as I walked in today. I was not at all expecting the amount of adoration, respect, and love that I received. I thank god for all soldiers, they are the best people on this planet.”
The feast featured turkey, all the trimmings, beverages, live entertainment and a pie baking contest! The Montrose VA and guiding eyes for the blind was also be on-hand to register veterans in their programs and health benefits.
Senator Ball said, “When many of these veterans came back from war they didn’t always hear thank you. It is so special for this community to come together and properly thank these veterans for the service they have given”.
County Execute Paul Eldridge who volunteered in the kitchen carving turkeys for over six hours said, “It is my pleasure to be here to help out. This has been a wonderful event to top off a great weekend we have had to honor our veterans”.
